This will definitely fix anything that could be causing it. If still not resolved, transfer data you want to keep to another drive, erase the external hdd/repartition and start over. Maybe stay away from terminal if you're unsure of bash/command prompt. I also have a LaCie HD that will not unmount.

However, this may cause for the entire backup to be dropped and a new backup may need to be created. If they were created using WD SmartWare or WD Backup you can delete files in the swstor folder within your hard drive.

There is an apple support article explaining how to do this. The hangup only occurs if I do an erase and backup fully - not if I do an. It depends on how you made your old backups. You can do this via a key command, and if still not working you can force empty through the terminal application (utility app also). If this doesn't show anything unusual or fix the issue you could then attempt to force empty trash. Before doing this I would advise copying your data to another drive if you have one. Run a verify disk and a permissions check/repair on the external hdd partition in question. If you don't need the backups - you can use Disk Utility to just erase the drive - that will empty your trash instantly as well as all the data on that drive. Unable to unmount, remove files, trash files, view files etc.īasically as suggested use the utility app called disk utility. You shouldn't be able to put any Time Machine files into the trash in the first place, so if that happened, you need to get anything you care about off that drive and erase it anyhow.

The Solution (and yes it can sound like a bit of voodoo magic) I found was. This could likened to a failing partition and can cause any sort of different issues eg. I opted to delete the old iCloud backup as I will be upgrading to a new iPhone 6s shortly and once my old iPhone 6 is gone, I don't think I will be able to delete backups associated with it (and hence will permanently lose iCloud storage). Sometimes, e.g., by using a database backup, there are backups in the storage directory which UrBackup does not know about, i.e. 11.4 Cleaning the storage folder of files not known by UrBackup. When I look at the backups, some of the servers have 32 and more restore points. If it should only delete old backups use 0. My problem is, I only want 8 backups on site here at Corporate, as we have limited disk space on our EVA. Every weekend, we write the disk backups to tape, and move them off site. Could be a permissions issue with one file within the TM backups preventing you from emptying trash.Ģ.could also be an issue with the sparse image created when you have a TM backup (basically a TM backup is a disk image). These backups, are then copied using MS DFS to our DR site. It could be a number of things causing this:ġ. Hey, are the files still in the trash when you have the ext hdd connected? After you've tried emptying I mean.
